The Ehrbar Hall – a piece of living music history
Built between 1876 and 1877, the Ehrbar Hall is renowned among musicians worldwide for its excellent acoustics. Originally commissioned by the successful K. & K. Hof- und Kammer-Klavierfabrikanten Friedrich Ehrbar, this concert hall was built in the style of the Italian High Renaissance.
Musical greats such as Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler have enchanted Viennese audiences in this historic hall, which shines in new splendour following its extensive renovation. The golden pairs of swans on the walls, each protecting a note, symbolise the protected space for music that Friedrich Ehrbar wanted to create.
After an eventful history – from wartime, when the hall was used as a military hospital and storage room, to the ceremonial reopening in 1946 with a festive concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra – the piano manufacturer C. Bechstein took over the Ehrbar Saal in 2021 and carefully renovated it.
Today, this special venue with state-of-the-art sound and lighting technology and an outstanding C. Bechstein Concert D 282 grand piano offers space for 375 people. Experience the magic of this concert hall steeped in tradition, where the past and present of classical music come together in a unique way.
